100 Miles on the North Country Trail
This past Sunday our hiking group headed out south of Rousseau and Pori to hike the Peter Wolfe Chapter’s segment 29 of the North Country Trail. With 7.4 miles to be hiked that day, we were positioned to reach our goal of 100 miles on the NCT in 2023. Fall color abounded, but not nearly to the same extent that we had seen in the area near Canyon Falls a couple days earlier.
A very interesting aspect of this hike would be the large amount of beaver activity we experience at a large beaver pond early in the hike.
Clearly the beavers working this pond were quite intent on making this impoundment even larger as they were in the process of taking down many larger trees to the west of the pond across a gentle slope which would have the potential of creating this outcome.
As we worked out way westward, we noted plenty of green leaves left to change among the many splashes of color.
This would be my 8th consecutive year of meeting the 100-mile challenge and Julie’s 7th consecutive year.
You can see my GoPro video from this hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
After the hike we enjoyed celebratory olive burgers with cold beer at the nearby Rousseau Bar. This is definitely a stop worth making when you are in the area!
The past week was an array of interesting meetings including Team Peninsula, the Chassell Lions Club, the Keweenaw Chamber, and One-Million Cups. I also worked in two 5-mile runs on the rail-trail both at 8:00/mile pace.
On Wednesday, I spent the morning working with a group of volunteers doing work on a North Country Trail bridge.
On our way back we came across these three trumpeter swans!
Thursday afternoon we made a trip to the farm to pick apples and visit with our neighbors.
