Autumn Drive to Copper Harbor - Part 2
When I left you last time, we were on our way to the top of Brockway Mountain Drive in the course of of our adventure to Copper Harbor a week ago this past Friday. Upon reaching its top at 1,320 feet, we found the valley below ablaze in brilliant gold.
Lake Medora added a nice contrast to the fall colors in the distance out to the southwest!
The passage eastward across the top before descending to Copper Harbor is one of the highest scenic drives to be found between the Rocky Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. My favorite part is taking in the view of Lake Superior’s vast blue expanse on the horizon!
There are numerous turnoffs where you can stop to continue to enjoy the view of the valley below and where mountain bike trails present opportunities for adventure. (Be sure to visit the Copper Harbor Trails Club website at https://copperharbortrails.org/)
The last turnoff provides an outstanding view over Copper Harbor, Lake Fanny Hooe, and the East Bluff.

From Copper Harbor, we headed back toward home. Since it was getting close to dinner time, we ordered a garlic chicken pizza to go from the Ambassador in Houghton as we were rolling down US 41 through Mohawk. The timing worked out great as we were able to eat and enjoy the beautiful reflection of fall colors and the lift bridge on the lake with both highlighted by the setting sun.
Over the weekend I squeezed in a beautiful 5-mile rail-trail run from Chassell.
You can see more shots from this run on my Instagram post at this link.
Our hiking group got out for an adventure last Sunday to Douglass-Houghton Falls. We hiked in by way of the snowmobile trail then upstream along Hammell Creek. It turned out to be an excellent day for a hike as we had plenty of sunshine, cool temperatures, and awesome fall color!
Tune it next time for the hike up Hammell Creek to the falls!
