Autumn Hiking to the top of Mt. Baldy
Last Sunday our hiking group headed up to Eagle Harbor to make the 6-mile round trip hike to the top of Mt. Baldy! With the autumn leaves already fallen in many places, we were fortunate to find a significant amount of brilliant colored leaves still upon the trees on this hike.
With its bald top, this peak provides outstanding views of Eagle Harbor, Lake Superior, Brockway Mountain, Mt. Houghton, and Mt. Bohemia.
You can see my GoPro video from the hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
Monday would be spent trail building on the North Country Trail in the eastern portion of the Peter Wolfe Chapter to the north of Nestoria. Over the last few years the chapter has been working on a re-route between Canyon Falls and Long Lake which will take the trail off of roads and put it more in the backcountry. Our chapter president, Connie Julien, led this effort to build about 6/10 of a mile of trail on the Lynch property with Mark Roberts, Marj Krumm, and me. We first needed to get to the trail which involved stopping to cut fallen trees at about five different places along the way.
We then bushwhacked to the proposed trail location. Mark did the chainsawing, Connie and Marj moved and lopped branches, and I dug out rocks, logs, and roots with the Pulaski.
A really cool geological feature found in this area is the glacial erratic. You will see these huge chunks of granite just chilling out along the trail. One especially noteworthy erratic is massive in size and cleaved down its middle with rock tripe growing on its northward facing side and ferns growing on top of its southern facing side. It sits atop a rock wall that then winds along a valley with a significant beaver dam holding back a good sized pond containing a beaver lodge.
More about this trail building effort and some trail maintenance in another location that same day in my next issue!
