Back in the Hood!
After last checking in at the completion of the Border to Border Ski, I flew from Oulu down to Helsinki where I met back up with Julie. We spent another week in Finland having an awesome time seeing a number of my cousins, exploring the places where two of my great-grandfathers and one of my gg-grandfather's came from, and even taking a day trip to Tallinn, Estonia. If you would like to learn about these adventures, check out my recent posts on Instagram at this link.
It was a busy first week back in the Keweenaw catching up on Remote Workforce Keweenaw, Chassell Township business, and Chassell Historical Organization business.
First up was featuring Jennifer Yugo from Hancock who recently brought her consultancy, Corvirtus, to the Keweenaw from Colorado Springs.
You can see Jennifer's vignette on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page at this link.
While not successful in the first round of the MDNR SPARK Grant opportunity, I continued pressing forward with the three EGLE permits that would be required for our application. I had submitted our EGLE permits application online before leaving for Finland and Hunter King with EGLE needed follow up on three of the cross-section drawings. I followed up with Chris Holmes at U.P. Engineers and Architects who indicated that these would be to Hunter when he returns on Monday.
I also wrote a grant proposal to the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission to seek funding to address an internal foundation issue on the north side of the Heritage Center. KNHP Advisory Commission grants have played an important role in helping us stretch our available funding to maintain the structural integrity of the building and helping us work toward universal accessibility.
On Friday I decided to challenge my leg injury with a one-mile swim at MTU's SDC.
The mild resistance worked great, so my plan is to swim a couple more weeks before I make my return to running.
With the ski season winding down, there was no way I was going to miss the last moonlight ski of the season at Mark and Kathy's on Saturday evening!
There was no wind and we were treated to a beautiful sunset. The snow while somewhat frozen at the surface had enough give to provide a fast but not icy surface. The clear sky allowed the moonlight to provide excellent post-sunset illumination. In the last shot above, we could see out over Lake Superior where we spied a freighter in the distance.
Sunday, our hiking/skiing group was out at Swedetown skiing up and down from M-203. Taking continued caution with my leg, I started at the Chalet and largely double poled down to M-203.
It is hard to believe that we are less than a month away from our Airbnb season starting. We easily have a foot or more of snow on the yard. The week ahead seems to be a slow creep into Spring with one warm day forecasted near 50 degrees.
