Back to Tibbets Falls
The past week started with another hike on the North Country Trail to Tibbets Falls. Things were a bit mangy the last time we hiked it, but our friends Jennifer, John, and Marg had been out there to do trail maintenance which would substantially enhance this hiking experience. We started the hike from the trailhead on the Baraga Plains Road to the north of Watton.
After an initial walk through the forest, the trail winds along the Sturgeon River on its way to the falls.
Along the way, there are some nice places to access the river that also make for decent swimming holes.
The Sturgeon River stair-steps its way down to a tilted slate formation that bends the flow into the most attractive part of the falls.
You can see it in motion at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Pinterest boards: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/500884789822795132/
Farther downstream our group took a break at the fire ring overlooking the river next to the Oren Krumm Shelter.
The dark waters of the river beautifully reflected the building thunderstorm clouds overhead.
We would get caught in a thundershower on our hike back to the trailhead where our friend Michael had nitro-infused coffee with sweetened condensed milk waiting for us as a post-hike treat!

I did manage to get in three swims this past week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings knocking out 2,000 yards in right at forty minutes each time. It would also be a week of board meetings starting with a Chassell Historical Organization annual meeting on Monday, a Hancock Trails Club board meeting on Tuesday, and I would be installed on the MTEC SmartZone’s board of directors at its meeting on Wednesday.
Monday I would complete most of the permits application to the EGLE for the two bridges and boardwalk at Maasto Hiihto (part of the Hancock Trails) and Mark Roberts and I would make two visits to the sites during the week on Tuesday and Saturday to take required measurements for the drawings he has prepared for inclusion with the application.
Remote Workforce Keweenaw would also be a big part of my week as I would share Ardith Brown’s remote worker vignette over social media.
You can learn Ardith’s remote work story by clicking on this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page.
I would also spend a good deal of time reaching out to remote workers about the remote worker networking event taking place this coming Thursday, July 25th, at 6 p.m. at the Agassiz Park Pavilion at 123 4th Street in Calumet that is being hosted by Main Street Calumet, the Villages of Calumet and Laurium, and Remote Workforce Keweenaw. If you are a remote worker, this will be a great opportunity to meet and network with other remote workers! We hope to see you there!
Thursday evening I volunteered for a couple of hours at the front desk of the Chassell Heritage Center while the Trio Tumpelot and Majority Finn performed in the auditorium. I really enjoyed their version of Villiruusu which was one of my grandmother’s favorites. If you enjoy accordion music, you might check out this other version of it that I found on YouTube at this link:
Friday I would spend a good part of the day helping Chassell Historical Organization board Secretary Millie Pyorala put together a PowerPoint presentation that she will be giving at the Chassell Heritage Center this coming Thursday at 7:00 p.m. on her recent trip to Iceland. Afterwards, Julie and I would get out for a walk on the Chassell Trails.
