Bushwhack to Plumbago Falls and Cave
When I left you last time, our friend Steve Jurmu (aka
) was guiding us to the site of a former graphite mine out to the south of L’Anse. Steve indicated that this graphite mine started by Henry Ford provided an important ingredient that went into the black paint for vehicles like the Model T. We descended into a pit where we could closely examine the material in its natural state. We then hiked across the pit to the former location of a cut that provided for the operation of a narrow gauge railroad and likely drainage from the pit.
From the pit we hiked to Plumbago Creek. Careful footing would be in order as the stream is located in a deep, narrow canyon. At the bottom, we found ourselves at an impoundment created by a beaver dam which was flanked by tall rock walls.
We would then begin a scramble upstream over large moss-covered boulders with Plumbago Creek tumbling amongst them.
Upon reaching the point where the stream emerged from the base of a rock wall, Steve guided several of us through passageways leading to chambers in the rock. After crawling through a narrow space, we reached the first chamber that was large enough to stand in.
After crawling through another narrow space, we would reach the next two chambers which would also involve crossing the creek in this underground passage.
