Cliff Mine Hike
This past Sunday we journeyed up to the site of the Cliff Mine which is know as the first successful copper mine in the Keweenaw. It operated from 1845 to 1887. Easily accessible a short distance from US 41 via the east end of the Cliff Drive, this four-mile hike provides outstanding views of the surrounding area which were magnified on this day by the significant amount of fall color!
As we saw with the recent hike we took to the Copper Falls mine site, the mortar in the structures at this early operating mine has dissolved giving the appearance of stacked rock.
The trail we followed to the top of the cliff was steep and provided added cardio to the hike!
The effort put forth to get to the top is rewarded by one of the most tremendous views you will find in the Keweenaw!
Once on top of the cliffs there are additional areas to explore including the significant piles of poor rock.
After taking in another view from the edge of the cliffs and following a road back down to the base of the cliffs, we came across the mine cemetery.
At the edge of a nearby pond we were able to spy upon a trumpeter swan.
Following the base of the cliffs and just before completing the hike we came upon another substantial ruin where the mortar was clearly dissolved and you were left wondering how it remained standing!
