Closing in on Completion
After finishing our hike on the Wiggle Creek segment of the North Country Trail last Wednesday, Mark, Jennifer, Julie, and I made a stop where the trail runs eastward from South Laird Road to hike in a quarter mile to inspect a bridge.
This one has been sinking in the middle and will need to be repaired, as half the bridge has given way due to structural fractures caused by the downward movement.
Hiking out, we would come across a good-sized patch of golden chanterelles. You can see them as part of my GoPro video on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
On our way homeward, we would make a short detour to Nisula to stop for ice cream at Red Hen Foods & Goods.
Thursday morning, I would be back at the Keweenaw Land Trust’s Boston Creek bridge and boardwalk project with Mark, Stan, Wolf, Jim, and Jennifer to continue work. We were making such significant progress that we kept working until after 2.
You can watch the day’s progress as we nearly complete the project on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link: https://youtube.com/shorts/jYFI3t-0kFo?si=f8IfoeunlvAABTTU
I would get back to Chassell just in time to attend Recreation and Zoning Committee meetings at 3:00 p.m. at the Fire Hall. I would run home in time to grab dinner and then work a volunteer shift at the Chassell Heritage Center from 6:30 to 9:00 while enjoying the musical entertainment by Bling Crosby.
Friday morning, Julie and I would put in our swims at MTU. A late start would only allow me to put in 2,800 yards. Afterwards, Julie and I would drive out south of Alston to put in another three miles on the North Country Trail. This time we would start out on the west end of the Wiggle Creek segment. Unlike our hike two days earlier, the mosquitoes were out in large quantities. We would flush two coveys of grouse along the way. We would also see plenty of beaver signs, including two active lodges. The biggest treat of the day would be coming across a pair of trumpeter swans. We would finish our hike just ahead of the rain and would even run into a thru-hiker on South Laird Road on our way out. We would run to Red Hen to pick up some bottled water for him and then return to hang it on a mileage sign he would pass on Forest Road 1500 the next day.
