When I left you last, Julie and I had just started a North Country Trail hike on the eastern edge of the Baraga Plains with the goal of completing our #hike100NCT Challenge for 2024. We had just come along Plumbago Creek and would be hiking through the forest just above its broad valley which is punctuated with beaver dams and impoundments. Unless you bushwhack toward the water for a closer look, the forest does an efficient job of obfuscating the creek’s presence; however, there is this nice unobstructed view as you make the southerly turn in the trail.
The forest in this stretch presents a wide variety of trees with a nice mix of pine, firs, poplar, and hardwoods.
The dry summer definitely impacted negatively upon the number of mushrooms we would see, but there were some to be seen along the way.
We also came across this cool burl as well as beaver signs.
We spent some time enjoying the sunshine on the Plumbago Creek Bridge before hiking onward to reach two miles out in order to put us at four miles at completion.
We would note beaver dams both below and above the bridge.
We would come across more mushrooms during the remainder of the hike.
We didn’t make a sign this year to commemorate the completion of our 100 miles so we opted for something more simple.
