Copper Falls Mine Site Hike
Last Saturday morning we hopped in the truck and headed out toward Duluth, Minnesota for Finn Fest. Unfortunately, the cumulative impact of over 323,000 miles and our recent off-road activities decided to manifest itself in the form of a hard shimmy as we made the curve on M-28 going into Wakefield. We will find out this coming week for sure, but my guess is that the CV joint is about to go. Not wanting to risk getting four hours away from home with the potential for a total breakdown when we needed to turn over the cabin the following morning, we decided turn back at Ironwood.
To make the most of the situation, we decided to drive back by way of Ontonagon with stops at Bonanza Falls on the Big Iron River and then at Porcupine Mountains State Park to hike an old-growth forest on the North Country Trail where we have previously found a large amount of lions mane mushrooms.
We didn’t run into any lions mane and given the light rain that was falling, we kept our hike short and headed over to Ontonagon where we stopped in at their historical museum. Julie talked to an artist there and I talked to the museum volunteer about Finnish genealogy. We had a nice lunch at The Squeeze and then headed homeward.
Sunday, after turning over the cabin and cutting the grass, we made it up to Calumet to meet up with our hiking group and headed up to the Copper Falls Mine site where we first hiked to an overlook and then through this copper mining site dating back to 1846.
The thimbleberries were numerous, as well as plump and juicy, making for great snacks along the way!
