Covered Road Drive under Blazing Fall Color
After completing the 5-Year Recreation Plan and getting it to our Township Clerk Lynn Gierke for posting last Monday, a rail-trail run through the beautiful fall colors seemed like an appropriate reward!
With the colors starting to flip along the lake and with nice weather in the forecast for Tuesday, we made a plan to take a drive out on the Covered Road the following day. To make sure we had adequate time for that adventure, I went ahead and knocked out the minutes for the previous month’s Hancock Trails Club board meeting and got them out to the board members ahead of Tuesday night’s meeting.
As hoped for, the trees along the Covered Road were pretty close to full color and did not disappoint!
Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day” seemed like an appropriate soundtrack for the day which I added to this GoPro clip that I posted on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/reel/189267750882141
From the Covered Road we drove up to Freda to take in the view of Lake Superior over the ruins of the Champion Stamp Mill.
On our way back toward Redridge, we stopped in to see our friend Rich where we picked up a pumpkin, squash, and some fresh apple cider!
After running some errands, we stopped at the Nara Trailhead along US 41 at the Pilgrim River to walk the dogs on the River Trail. It was equally beautiful there.

With the Hancock Trails Club board meeting in the rearview mirror, Wednesday got off to an early start with my attendance at the Keweenaw Chamber meeting at the Bonfire in Houghton. Julia Petersen from The Nature Conservancy was presenting on the progress on the over 30,000 acres purchased in Keweenaw County. Before and after the meeting I had some good conversation starting with Elizabeth Mitteer who is a travel consultant at Agate Vacations (www.agatevacations.com) who works remotely from Houghton. I learned that her husband works remotely as a Chief Technology Officer for a consulting firm in Florida. I then had the opportunity to update Don McLean on Chassell related matters. Don manages the River Trails project going in on the back side of the MTU Trails (www.rivertrailsland.com). After the meeting I talked with Stephen Bosio who is opening the Bosio Busquit Company (https://www.bosiobiscuit.com/) in Tapiola this coming Friday. We discussed the vision for a multi-use trail from Baraga to Chassell and ultimately to the Nichols Trail. We will be looking to continue this conversation on the topic of connecting between Chassell and the Nichols Trail.
At noon, Chassell Township Planning Commission Chair Brian Waters and I met up with Barb McEwen from the Baraga Convention & Visitors Bureau and Bill from the Baraga County Trail Authority to walk the portion of Snowmobile Trail 15 from the Sturgeon Road to the Snake River to see what work is necessary to re-open the trail this winter. We talked a great deal about our vision to establish a multi-use trail between Baraga and Chassell. The rails are still in the abandoned stretch of the corridor between Chassell and Arnheim. We will be looking to work with MDOT and the MDNR to remove the rails and to work toward establishing this trail. We also discussed our interest in partnering with Baraga County on seeking river trail status for the Sturgeon River from the MDNR. Barb is interested in working with us and we will forward our draft proposal to her once we have it prepared.
On Wednesday evening I ran four miles on the MTU Trails with the Keweenaw Running Group. Running the hills was worth the effort to take in the beautiful fall colors! I also came face-to-face with a buck during the course of the run!
