After grooming the Chassell Classic Ski Trail last Friday, I just had to get out there to ski it! The snow definitely had a different texture from Tuesday’s ski as there was more glide and less grip than the perfect balance experienced with the previous grooming; nevertheless, I had a very enjoyable ski under the late afternoon sunshine.
Along the way I would run into Jim and Rae Vaught and had a nice conversation with them. While talking with them I would get a call from Julie who had just finished snowshoeing the Chassell Snowshoe Trails with our friend Carol. They were heading over to La Katrina which is a Mexican restaurant that recently opened in the former home of the Pilgrim River Steakhouse. We would plan to meet there once I finished my ski.
Dinner at La Katrina was awesome! I had the spinach and chicken burrito along with a mojito.
Saturday afternoon we would head into Houghton where I would meet up with Randy Ojanen and his son Paul at Cyberia Cafe. Randy is the son of Calvin Ojanen who was a good friend and classmate of my Dad at the Chassell Township Schools. Randy is an inventor and lives in Bristol, Tennessee. Paul works in information technology and was here on a workcation as both he and Randy were here for Winter Carnival.
Across the street from Cyberia, this really cool ice sculpture was being produced by Presence Chainsaw Sculpture of Chassell.
Julie and I would then head over to Hancock to check out the Phi Kappa Tau snow sculpture that had won this year’s competition.
We would then stop for a ski on the MTU Trails.
Sunday we would meet up with our hiking/skiing group at our friends Rich and Debby’s place for a 5.6-mile back country cross country ski and potluck.
You can check out the action from my GoPro video of the ski at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
