Cross Country Skiing Paradise
If you are into cross country skiing, the Keweenaw is definitely the place to be! As I mentioned in my last post, I am gearing up for the Border to Border ski in Finland. The numerous options I have for places to train at within a half hour and even more within an hour are a huge help. Whether you are into training or just skiing for pleasure, the Keweenaw is absolutely a cross country skiing paradise!
As I left off last time, I wanted to share a few more shots from my ski at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids a week ago yesterday. While grooming was still a challenge due to the significant amount of snow received, the beauty I found was well worth the slower conditions.
Last Wednesday I took a break from skiing and opted for the Keweenaw Running Group run from the SDC at MTU. Yak Trax were definitely in order as the sidewalks and roads were largely snow-packed.
At the post-run gathering I had the opportunity to discuss my layering issues and got some great suggestions on underlayers that I will be experimenting with between now and Border to Border.
I took a break from skiing on Thursday and spent the day preparing for the Chassell Township Planning Commission meeting that evening.
I hit the MTU Trails on Friday. It was a brisk 0 degrees F. Julie dropped me off up top and headed over to Walmart while I put in almost 7 miles skiing down to the Nara Trailhead. I darn near froze my face skiing down Skidder with the breeze created by the downhill run. The sun was a welcome sight when I hit the Homestead Loop along the Pilgrim River.
That evening we did a 4-mile moonlight ski with friends. The temperature had creeped up to 3 degrees. While quite cold, the lack of wind made the conditions reasonably tolerable. The near full moon created beautiful images!
Saturday, Mark and I skied the Swedetown Trails from the M-203 trailhead. The conditions were awesome with both excellent kick and glide. We took one break in the course of this near 13.5 mile ski to talk with our friend Dave who we ran into on Baby Bear.
On Sunday our hiking/skiing group skied the Eagle Harbor Trails. The conditions were awesome and the views beautiful as a result of a lake-effect snow globe.
