Last week would start with a Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Redevelopment Ready Community check-in meeting with Pablo Majano where we would discuss the next couple of deliverables that we will focus on knocking out.
With family in town, we took a pass on swimming and they would be the focus of our activities for the first half of the week.
The weather was particularly nice last Monday afternoon and evening, so we took advantage of it by hanging out down by the lake.
Tuesday morning, Township Supervisor Lynn Gierke and I would take measurements for a fence that volunteers will be installing in the community. Afterwards, I picked everyone up at home and we headed out for an adventure in the Keweenaw. Our first stop would be for pasties at Roy’s in Houghton. The wildfire smoke from Manitoba was as thick as a heavy fog as you can see in this shot of the lift bridge from in front of Roy’s.
Of course, these conditions would come on the backside of a report noting how the Keweenaw is the sunniest place east of the Mississippi in the summer. You can see this article at this link.
After making a stop for coffee at Camp Coffee in Houghton, we headed out for Eagle River where we made a stop at Eagle River Falls.
A short distance farther up the road, we stopped at Jacobs Creek Falls and the Jampot.
For me, no stop at the Jampot is complete without acquiring a carrot cake muffin with cream cheese frosting!
Driving farther to the east on M-26 along Lake Superior, we would make a stop at the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
Given the drizzly conditions, we took the Eagle Harbor cut-off back up to US 41 and drove to Delaware where we went on the self-guided tour of the Delaware Copper Mine!
The rain substantially reduced the smoke going into Wednesday. We would go for a walk on the nearby Nara Nature Trail along the Pilgrim River and then head into Houghton for lunch.
We would check out the cruise ship docked in Houghton (see an article about the ship at this link) and then head over to the Ambassador to take out pizzas we had ordered from the trail. We would enjoy our pizzas on the Houghton waterfront!
Shifting gears, for remote workers thinking about locating in the Keweenaw, I would encourage you to check out the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page to learn about remote workers already here. We are currently featuring Hancock remote worker Charles Closmann.
You can learn Charles’ remote work story on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page at this link: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/15xwYdFnJH/
Beautiful, enticing photos! (Especially Eagle River Falls--wow)
I thought the air quality in Wisconsin had been bad, but that photo of the life bridge is eye opening!
