Getting a Jump Start on #hike100NCT in 2024!
Welcome to 2024! After hiking the Central and Madison Mines this past Sunday, we were tempted by the Yooper Chook Drop in Houghton, but chose instead to spend a quiet evening at home. I had promised to share some photos from our 5.28-mile hike at the mine sites, so let’s start there.
We began this adventure by hiking up to the site of the Central School.
We then hiked to the site of the Central Mine powder house where explosives were stored.
After hiking back down through Central, we hiked eastward toward the Madison Mine site.
At the mine site we scrambled up to the top of the bluff where we enjoyed outstanding views toward Mt. Houghton and Mt. Bohemia as well as Mt. Horace Greeley.
Back down at the mine site we checked out the ruins of the Madison Mine’s powder house.
We then hiked back to Central where we saw more ruins and the huge poor rock piles.
On New Year’s Day we jumped on the opportunity to get started on our 2024 quest to hike another one-hundred miles on the North Country Trail with our friends Mark and Jennifer. We put in a 6-mile out-and-back hike on the NCT from where the trail crosses the road going into Big Lake from just off the Baraga Plains Road. It turned out to be a beautiful day with a lot of bright sunshine, blue sky, and recent snowfall that created some beautiful views along the way.
I will share more photos from this hike next time. For now, you can check out my GoPro Quik video from photos and videos I shot on my phone during this hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
