Hiking Churning Rapids
A week ago Saturday after hiking at McLain State Park, we continued to take advantage of the mild weather by making a stop to hike at Nara Nature Park along the Pilgrim River.
On Sunday our hiking group headed up to High Point Road off of M-203 to the north of Hancock to hike into Churning Rapids. Our friend John Diebel led the hike which followed a combination of trails and bushwhacks that he frequently takes in the area. After hiking the Villi Maki Trail downstream along Spring Creek, we picked up the new Jimmy Dean Trail and hiked it up to Thoroughfare. If you like to mountain bike, Jimmy Dean is a trail you will want to check out!
After reaching Throughfare we bushwhacked down to and followed Finni Creek downstream until we reached a turnaround point.
You can see my GoPro video from this hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
Monday turned out to be a great work day for the historic interpretive trail as DP Construction made excellent progress on the boardwalk’s span from the planing mill toward the former site of the offices.
Although the decking still needed to be added, the initial span heading northwesterly from the planing mill looked great!
We spent a good deal of time on Monday afternoon helping search for a friend’s lost dog that had just been seen on the Upper Pike River Road. Our friend Steve Jurmu came down with his drone to assist with the search, but unfortunately we had no luck.
The weather forecast for Wednesday evening was looking less than desirable for a run (snow with strong wind) so I headed out for a run on the rail-trail around lunch time on Tuesday. A cold rain started to fall along the way and I was soaking wet by the time I returned home.
It was also Giving Tuesday and we were excited about the opportunity being extended by the Portage Health Foundation to match up to $200,000 in donations to 26 non-profit organizations here in the Keweenaw. We donated online and were very pleased to learn that the community came forward well beyond the match amount put forward by the foundation.
Pat Coleman forwarded his complete draft of the Chassell Township Master Plan that we have been meeting with him about over the last several months. We will be meeting with him to discuss the draft on December 8th.
DP Construction continued its work on the historic interpretive trail boardwalk with the structural span from the planing mill reaching the former site of the offices.
Wednesday morning I got out in the snow to meet up with remote worker Jenn Jugo over coffee at KC Bonkers in Hancock. Jenn works remotely from the Keweenaw for Covirtus which is a management and human resources consulting firm based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. We had a really nice conversation and I am looking forward to featuring her in a Remote Workforce Keweenaw vignette!
