Hiking Mt. Houghton
The last week provided an interesting mix of activities starting with a television interview at Centennial Park here in Chassell with WJMN Channel 3 where I discussed the park and projects over the last three years, including the Chassell Bark Park (Chassell’s fenced off-leash dog park), our 10-station fitness trail on the cross country ski trail, the canoe/kayak launch on the Sturgeon River, the new playground, the new disc golf course, and the soon to be constructed historic interpretive trail on the former mill site. Channel 3 will be airing a series of stories on Chassell this week leading into the annual Strawberry Festival which starts on Friday.
Wednesday was spent turning over our Airbnb for our next guests and cutting grass. Our new guests from Ohio timed their arrival perfectly as they arrived just as we returned from the Chassell Farmers Market and before we headed out to MTU to meet up with the Keweenaw Running Group. Wednesday’s KRG run covered 4.7 miles and featured Hairy Toad. This often rocky and root laden single track requires lightning fast reflexes and leaves no margin for sightseeing!
This past week Remote Workforce Keweenaw featured Dave McCloud who works remotely from the Houghton area!
You can check out Dave’s story on this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page.
I don’t have a photo to go along with this, but one of our Airbnb guests caught a 20 1/4” smallmouth bass from our seawall on Thursday morning!
Friday we were down on the farm so I could do a walkaround with Andy Van Dyke from Besse Forest Products to discuss a potential thinning of our forest in accordance with our forest management plan. It was a great morning to be in the woods! We came across this large nest fairly high off the ground and wondered if it might belong to a goshawk.
We also crossed the acreage where we had developed habitat for golden winged warblers with the help of a grant funded program promoted by the American Bird Conservancy and work completed by Eric Swies from Northern Land Works.
You can see a video about that project at this link at 906 Outdoors to an episode of Discovering.
I worked in a 10k run on the rail-trail on Saturday. The rest of the day turned into an opportunity for running errands and kicking back by the lake.
Sunday we drove up to Bete Grise with the hiking group to hike to the top of Mt. Houghton! This out-and-back hike is just short of five miles in length and largely follows two-tracks most of the way to the top. The weather was sunny and pleasant. The hike nearly all up hill to the rhyolite outcropping found near the top of this 1,467 foot peak near the shore of Lake Superior.
The views from the top over Lake Superior and Bete Grise are spectacular!
