Hiking Nature Sanctuaries in the Keweenaw - Part 1
Last week ended with a good deal of focus on my major projects. I spent both Thursday and Friday contacting organizations and employers about participation in the Remote Worker Networking event scheduled for October 12th and completing the EGLE permit application for the boardwalk for the historic interpretive trail project on the former mill site here in Chassell.
Saturday we took a drive out on the Covered Road and stopped by to see our friend Rich who showed us his apple cider press.
Sunday, our hiking group head up toward Copper Harbor to hike four nature sanctuaries. We met up at Esrey Park along M-26 where we took in some beautiful views of Lake Superior.
A short walk from Esrey Park we started hiking the trail into the Keweenaw Shore Sanctuary. The trail leads through four different plant communities, including a cedar swamp and a bog.
One of the highlights of this portion of the hike was the numerous pitcher plants we saw which had really cool blooms!
After hiking 3/4 of a mile on this trail, we crossed Brockway Mountain Drive and picked up the trail into the Upson Lake Sanctuary. This hike featured a crossing over a beaver dam where the lake exited into Upson Creek.
A loop trail in the sanctuary takes you past what we are sure has to be the largest birch tree we have ever seen!
After completing the loop we doubled back to Esrey Park. You can see the GoPro video from this hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
Our next stop was the top of Brockway Mountain where we took in the view of the emerging fall colors.
