Hiking the Bete Grise Preserve
This past Sunday a small group of us ventured up to the Lac La Belle area to take a hike at the Bete Grise Preserve along Lake Superior. There had been at least 5 inches of fluffy snow which was not quite enough to necessitate the wearing of snowshoes and made for a beautiful setting for the hike!
After hiking a short distance through the woods from the trailhead, we reached the Lake Superior shore where we hiked along Bete Grise with Point Isabelle back over our shoulders.
Looking across the bay there was an excellent view of the snow covered rhyolite atop Mt. Houghton.
The conditions were less than ideal for our shihtzus Red and Blue as the snow balled up on their feet. As a result, they were carried all the way out and had a much easier time walking the beaten down path upon our return.
The snow laden branches of the spruce forest provided a very pleasing appearance throughout the hike!

I squeezed in a couple of runs this week with a 10k on Monday and a nearly 5 mile run with the Keweenaw Running Group on Wednesday evening. Running along Lakeshore Drive in Houghton with the KRG, we took in this awesome view of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
The first major snow of the season is scheduled to hit us tomorrow with at least a foot in the current forecast! This will surely get the ski season going and I look forward to sharing that with you in my next post. In the meantime, Early Bird Construction is hustling today to button-down our garage construction project. The trusses finally showed up yesterday and not a moment too soon!
