Hiking the Gratiot Lake Overlook
At my last writing, we had just completed the tour of the Calumet Air Force Station atop Mt. Horace Greeley. We drove downhill from there and met up again at the boat launch at Gratiot Lake. Even with all the recent warm weather, the lake had maintained a significant amount of ice on its surface.
Across the road from the launch is a trailhead for the Michigan Nature Association’s Gratiot Lake Overlook Nature Sanctuary.
We would like the roughly .7-mile trail to the overlook with a climb of over three-hundred feet to the top. Along the way, we would stop to view Eister Falls.
You can check it out in motion on this link to my Waterfalls board on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Pinterest boards.
The trail to the overlook is a climb nearly the entire distance. The final ascent wound its way up a northern facing slope, so we encountered a fair amount of snow on this part of the hike.
This turned out to be an ideal time to make this hike as there was no foliage on the hardwoods to obstruct the view over the frozen lake below.
The hike back down was considerably faster than the trip up!

Since I did not have it ready for my last post, here is the link to my GoPro video from our tour of the Calumet Air Force Station at Mt. Horace Greeley:
After completing our hikes, a big group of us met up at the U.P. Pub in Calumet for burgers and cold refreshments!
Like last week, I would spend a large number of hours scraping our waterfront deck in preparation for power washing and re-sealing. One thing I didn’t mention last week is that I was entertained by the MDNR’s fish counting activities on Portage Lake. They were netting at three locations that I could see from the deck. It would be interesting to know their findings as they seemed to be pulling out large quantities of fish!
More about the business side of the week next time!
