Hiking the NCT in the Trap Hills
My Thursday and Friday last week were intensely focused on addressing details going into this week’s remote worker networking event. On Thursday morning I joined in on Kevin Store’s Portage Health Foundation call with the area’s non-profit organizations to talk with them about Remote Workforce Keweenaw and to invite them to have a presence at the event. The idea here is to help create awareness with our remote workers about the services provided by these organizations and to help them connect with organizations they could support. Given the deep talent found among our remote workers, there might be a great opportunity for our local non-profits to find potential board members and volunteers who would be passionate about the missions of their organizations.
I had lunch with Hancock-based software developer Xeratec’s President Brett Hillstrom to discuss the Remote Workforce Keweenaw initiative as well as their interest in participating in the networking event. It was awesome getting to know Brett and to learn about the work performed by his company. With such a significant information technology component to our remote workforce, there will clearly be a big opportunity for synergy here.
I spent my afternoon making final preparations for the evening’s Chassell Township master planning and Planning Commission meetings. We have continued to make good forward progress with developing our master plan with our consultant, Pat Coleman from North of 45. During the Planning Commission meeting I shared the good news about receiving the approval for the EGLE permit on the boardwalk for our historic trail project. We also discussed moving forward with implementing a contribution-funded blight remediation program that had grown out of our blight survey a few years back and prioritizing the replacement of the waterfront boardwalk at Centennial Park with help from next year’s recreation millage funding.
Friday was consumed with follow up with remote workers about the the networking event. I also coordinated with BJ at The Print Shop in Houghton on a flyer about the networking event that I would post at coffee shops and other places around the area. After slipping in my twenty-first grass cutting of the season, I ran to The Print Shop where I picked up the flyers and took in these views of Hancock before distributing the flyers to bulletin boards at locations where remote workers I am not aware of might see them.
Saturday we drove up to Calumet to post flyers and caught the sale at Down Wind in Houghton along the way. I continued to work on follow up in preparation for the networking event, but we broke away in the evening to have dinner with our friends John, Cheryl, Steve, and Lisa.
Sunday we headed down to the Trap Hills to hike the Peter Wolfe Chapter’s segment 13 of the North Country Trail from just east of the U.S. Mine site to just above the Victoria Reservoir. The blazing fall colors resulted in spectacular views throughout the hike!
