Hiking the Pilgrim Community Forest
This past Sunday we started the week with a group hike close to home at the Pilgrim Community Forest. Seventeen of us took this roughly 5.5 mile hike out to the Pilgrim River and back on this trail near Houghton that can be found across from the junction of the Paradise and Pilgrim Roads.
The trail winds along a ridge in a rough southwesterly direction above the Pilgrim River valley below through a hardwood forest of maple and oak with a lot of fern below.
The trail eventually descends to the river which it follows for a short while before coming to an end.
If you would enjoy walking through the forest with the added mix of a clear, tumbling stream, this often overlooked hiking option close to Houghton is a great choice! You can see my GoPro video from the hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
After the hike we enjoyed dinner at the 1902 Tap and Grill in South Range. I highly recommend their burgers and sweet potato fries!
Monday, Julie and I would head down to hike 5.9 miles on the North Country Trail out to the east of the Canyon Falls roadside park. I will cover that adventure in the next issue!
