Hiking the Silver River Canyon
With family heading homeward, we sought peace and quiet last Saturday by getting out for a 4.2 mile hike on the North Country Trail to the south of Alston.
The hike turned into quite a snack-fest as we came across abundant quantities of ripe thimbleberries, particularly as we approached Boulder Creek!
This segment of the NCT has a beautiful older growth forest between Boulder Creek and the Silver River. There is a large amount of hemlock which provides quite a canopy for blocking the sun and reducing the amount of growth below.
We took advantage of the warm weather and went wading in the Silver River!

The next day we headed out for an adventure with our hiking group in the Silver River Canyon. As a result of some extra cleaning work on the back side of our departing Airbnb guests, we had to spot our group about a 35 minute head start. Since this hike is primarily in the river, the delayed start helped to clear the water so we could make more certain steps on the river bottom.
The river flows over moss-covered conglomerate as you hike its course over one slide fall after another along steep rock walls!
We caught up with our hiking group at the top of the canyon and hiked back out with them.
