Hiking the Western Baraga Plains!
When I left you last, we were getting set to hike the North Country Trail on the western end of the Baraga Plains. We initially headed eastward through the Ottawa National Forest across some well maintained red pine forests where recent thinning has occurred.
The trail then crosses out of the Ottawa and passes into state forest lands that were impacted by the 2007 controlled burn that got out of control as part of what is known as the Baraga Bump Fire.
Over the last eight years we have hiked this area, it has been cool to see the significant amount of forest regeneration that has occurred! Scattered throughout this area are numerous larger pine that survived and have scorched bark from the fire while many others were not so lucky.
We stopped to have lunch at the Oren Krumm Shelter along the Sturgeon River.
We turned back here which would bring our final mileage total for the day up to six miles. Along the way, we saw many scorched dead trees that will like be falling in matter of time.
You can see my GoPro video of this hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
Saturday morning I slipped in a 5-mile run on the rail-trail in over 80% humidity. Thank goodness for the light breeze out of the southeast on my return!
In the afternoon we ran out to the mouth of the Gratiot River on Lake Superior outside of Ahmeek. It is definitely a favorite place of ours to search for agates and cool looking minerals! There were a few people there, but, as you can see, you could hardly call it crowded.
On our way home we stopped for baked parmesan crusted whitefish at 4 Suns across from the Quincy Mine. It was awesome like usual!
Sunday we would be heading up into the Keweenaw for an epic bushwhack on the Silver River, but I will wait to tell you about that next time!
