Hiking to Rockhouse Point on Lake Superior
It has been a very busy time over the last week here in the Keweenaw and I find myself at least a couple of posts behind! I will start by taking you back to last Sunday when our hiking group took a 5.6-mile hike from Agate Beach along the Lake Superior shore to Rockhouse Point and back.
The day was sunny and pleasant with temperatures in the low 70s. There was a decent breeze which did an excellent job of keeping the flies away.
This hike takes you across the mouth of the Elm River which takes in its south branch just before entering Lake Superior.
A short distance past the Elm River, we would come across this snapping turtle on the beach.
Farther along we would come across this large basalt boulder in the surf which contained an interesting array of colorful very agate looking blemishes on its surface.
Even farther along we would pass beaches covered with driftwood and large rocks.
Eventually, we would reach Rockhouse Point where the sandy bottom of Lake Superior we found at Agate Beach turned to large rock slabs extending out into the big lake.

Monday, I would put in a 2,350-yard swim at MTU and then I would turn my attention to weedwhacking the remainder of the old ice rink and pulling wetland grasses that had grown through the boardwalk on the Chassell Historic Trail. Over the course of a couple of hours, I would get two of the three boardwalks completed.
That evening, I would get out fishing with Eero. I would only catch one hammer handle, but Eero would get both a keeper pike and a walleye.
Around working on a small grant proposal to the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation for the Hancock Trails Club, Julie and I would get out for a 5.5-mile hike at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids with our friend Chris to take in both the Skyway Trail and the Brooks Gorge.
