Hiking Voodoo Mountain and a Sturgeon River Paddle
The past week started with a hike with our hiking group to the top of Voodoo Mountain. The thimbleberries were still around in decent quantities, so Michael and I swept some distance behind the group picking as much of the red gold as we possibly gather without getting too far behind.
The over five-mile hike netted over two cups of thimbleberries which added nicely to the jam supply upon the return home. You can see my GoPro video from the hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
Monday morning started with an 1,800 yard swim at the SDC pool at MTU. I then met up with remote worker Will Weaver to learn about his effort to create a contiguous hiking trail up through the Keweenaw Peninsula. I am looking forward to discussing Will and his initiative in a future issue.
After providing Will a number of key introductions, I knocked out the minutes for the last Hancock Trails Club board meeting in preparation for Tuesday night’s meeting.
Tuesday afternoon we went kayaking on the Sturgeon River with our friends Mark and Kathy. We started out at the US 41 bridge at the new Chassell Township kayak launch. We paddled downstream into the cut which is a canal that was constructed from the Sturgeon River to Pike Bay back in the 1870s. This would be an important pathway for white pine timber cut in the Sturgeon River valley as logs were scored in Pike Bay and then rafted to the Sturgeon River Lumber Company to its mill in Hancock. The company would later build the mill Chassell which began operation in 1888 and served as the catalyst for the founding of Chassell.

We got back in time from paddling to squeeze in dinner ahead of the evening’s Hancock Trails Club board meeting.
Wednesday morning started with a 2,300 yard swim at the SDC pool at MTU. It was going to be hot day, so I took a pass on the evening run with the Keweenaw Running Group in favor of a 10k rail-trail run on Thursday morning in the much cooler conditions.
