Holy Transfiguration Monastic Park and Other Miscellaneous Adventures - Part 2
While on the Slate River last Thursday, we hiked downstream from Black Slate Falls to Quartzite Falls. A really cool aspect of this part of the river is the seams of quartz you will find running through the bedrock in the stream bed.
The falls slide over chiseled slate into a pool providing a great place for a summer swim where small curious brook trout will come up and nip at your toes.
Friday found us hiking along the Gratiot River off of a two-track from the Farmers Block Road north of Ahmeek. The streambed here is made up of conglomerate which causes the river to whisper as it rushes over it. Hiking upstream from the parking area you will find Conglomerate Falls.
The weather was outstanding with a comfortable temperature and no clouds in the sky. Better yet, we did not encounter any mosquitoes or flies! I forgot to bring my sandals, but it was easy enough to walk over the falls in my bare feet.
Although we did not do it on this visit, the Gratiot River is fun to wade during the summer from Conglomerate Falls on down to Lower Gratiot Falls. You can check out my GoPro video of our Friday hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
Saturday, I slipped in an 8-mile run on the rail-trail. The tree pollen continues to be a boat anchor for deep breathing, but the conditions seem to be improving!
On Sunday we went for a 5.1 mile hike along the Sturgeon River on the North Country Trail to the east of the Canyon Falls Roadside Park. We started the hike just after a thundershower passed by and managed to squeeze the hike in before rain moved in again.
