Hungarian Falls Snowshoe
The past week saw the first pronounced thaw of the winter with several days with temperatures above freezing. Our cabin’s metal roof sloughed off all of its snow and it looks like we lost about a foot of our base in the yard. Monday morning’s pre-sunrise activity on the lake reflected the local fishermen’s urgency in advance of Tuesday’s end of the pike and walleye season!
Community and board work dominated my week as I submitted a recreation grant proposal to the Portage Health Foundation on Monday, drafted and distributed minutes to Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club board members in my role as board Secretary in preparation for the evening’s board meeting on Tuesday, made final changes to the draft revision of the township’s zoning ordinance in preparation for our fourth public hearing scheduled in April and worked with the Clerk on getting them posted, presented to the Chassell Lions Club executive board on Thursday morning and attended a Dial Help board of directors meeting on Thursday evening, and pushed out a survey to remote workers for the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance on Friday. With the change in the weather and with so much going on, it seemed like a good time to shift my focus to running from skiing.
Wednesday’s Keweenaw Running Group run was the warmest since last fall. We ran down to the sands from MTU’s SDC and then back through the adjoining neighborhoods.
Friday the pavement was so clear and dry that I laced up my Kinvaras for a faster pace along US 41.
Saturday morning we drove up to Calumet to have coffee with with remote workers Dan and Shauna at Keweenaw Coffee Works to talk about their upcoming vignette. While we were up there Dan took us on a tour of the Calumet Theater!
This one of a kind cultural gem opened when copper was king in the year my great-grandfather Sillanpaa came to Calumet from Finland. Learn more about it at this link!
While we were in the area, we stopped at the Woodland Trailhead on the south side of the Swedetown Trails to run the dogs. The trees had been coated by freezing fog which created a really cool appearance!
Sunday turned out to be an amazing day to be outside! With barely a cloud in the sky and very little wind, the temperature reached into the upper 40s. We went on a snowshoe with friends to Hungarian Falls. The warm conditions kept those without snowshoes pretty close to the trail to avoid post-holing beyond their knees!
