This past Tuesday morning I would start my day on the air with Elaine Hendrickson at WMPL in Hancock. We would have a wide-ranging discussion about a number of topics including Remote Workforce Keweenaw, the bridge and boardwalk project at the Keweenaw Land Trust’s Boston Creek and other bridge/boardwalk projects led by Mark Roberts, the North Country Trail, and the shop classroom renovation project and Thursday evening’s program at the Chassell Heritage Center.
From WMPL, I would drive up to the Keweenaw Land Trust’s Boston Creek bridge and boardwalk project where Mark, Stan, Wolf, Jim, and I would be focused on putting in the footings for the boardwalk and constructing a significant leg from the bridge that we completed the previous Thursday.

That afternoon, Julie and I would go for a hike at the Nara Nature Park which unexpectedly turned into picking enough thimbleberries for another jar’s worth of jam!
Along the way, we would spy upon an 8-point whitetail buck taking a drink from the Pilgrim River!

That evening, I would be back in Hancock for a two-hour Hancock Trails Club board meeting.
Wednesday morning, we would take a pass on swimming to go on a North Country Trail hike with our friends Mark and Jennifer. We would access the trail from South Laird Road to the south of Alston and head southwesterly on the trail on what we call the Wiggle Creek segment. The first part of this segment was logged recently but seems to be filling back in rather quickly.
We would see a wide array of mushrooms throughout the hike, particularly as we came alongside Wiggle Creek in the more forested portion of the hike.
We would hike to the boardwalk at the West Branch of the Sturgeon River which is effectively located at the source of the river. This river eventually flows into the Sturgeon River which empties out into Portage Lake near Chassell. The glacial moraine on the west side of this roughly five-mile segment seems to serve as the divide for streams that then flow westward toward the East Branch of the Ontonagon River which flows into the Ontonagon River and then Lake Superior at Ontonagon.
