Major Snow Event!

The past week started off with an awesome group ski on Sunday afternoon from the Nara Nature Park Trailhead (on the right hand side of the map below) into the MTU Trails! We skied Nara to the Ridge Loop then skied the Royalwood Loop before heading up Down Under and Skidder. We skied north on Balsam and Maple to get over to ski the Peepsock Loop before picking up Linden. Up top we skied the Core and Portage Loops before heading back down on Skidder and Down Under. Once we got back down to the Ridge Loop, we skied the Tanglewood Loop before finishing up on Ridge and Nara.

The glide was fast and the recent new snow made it particularly fun to ski down Skidder and Down Under where we were able to attain some good speed with decent control! This link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel will give you an idea about that experience!

Monday and Tuesday turned into a major snow event for a good portion of the U.P.! We certainly received our share here in Chassell! The wind drifted in our sidewalk down to the lake on both days of the storm!

Aside from moving a lot of snow, these two days turned out to be a good time to knock out work on a number of my projects! The snow also did not hamper Early Bird Construction’s work on the insulation and drywall and Aire Care’s installation of the gas line on the second floor of the garage project!

Wednesday evening’s Keweenaw Running Group run headed out on 7th where the snow banks along the street are really starting to build up!

Thursday, bright sunshine made a spectacular reappearance in the Keweenaw! UPPCO returned to connect the electrical service and installed a new meter at the garage!

With beautiful sunshine and very little wind, we decided to spend the afternoon skiing at the Swedetown Trails in Calumet. The trails were beautifully groomed after the recent snow. I was surprised to see that there had been very little traffic on a couple of my favorite trails, Powderhouse and Ed’s Loop!

Upon our return home, we found that Phil and his crew had completed putting in the insulation and drywall on the second floor of the garage. They would start taping and mudding on Friday!

Friday turned out to be another great day to hit the trails! I ran over to the Nara Nature Park Trailhead for a ski into the MTU Trails largely so I could pick up the cardio associated with the multiple elevation gains possible from that starting point! The cool thing about starting at the bottom is that it is almost all downhill on the return trip!

The wind picked up on Saturday with the mildest weather we have seen in some time. The temperature climbed up to the freezing point under continued sunny skies! We decided to head over to Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids on the north side of Hancock where knew we could work our way into the forest and get out of the wind. Our friends Mark, Beverly, and Jennifer joined us on what would end up being almost 2.5 hours of skiing!

It is hard to believe that it is going to be March already this coming week! If you are here in the area or plan to be in the area next weekend, the Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club’s Glide-N-Gorge will be on Saturday afternoon at Maasto Hiihto from 12 to 3 starting at the trailhead at the back of the Houghton County Fairgrounds in Hancock! The event is free this year and will feature snacks and hot chocolate. Donations are always appreciated!
