More Entertaining in the Keweenaw
July wrapped up being a very busy month with two sets of family coming into town to spend time with us. The awesome thing about living in the Keweenaw is there is no shortage of ways to keep guests entertained!
I had a meeting last Monday morning over coffee with Jake Northey, the Founder & Chief Product Engineer with Creative Mines and also the Co-Founder of 101 Quincy Coworking (which serves remote workers and digital nomads here in the Keweenaw). The purpose of my meeting with Jake at K.C. Bonkers in Hancock was to bring him up to speed on the rapidly growing information technology segment within our remote work population here in the Keweenaw and to see if he had remote workers on his radar screen that are not currently in my metrics. The location served the dual purpose of allowing my grandsons to check out the awesome toys and games available at K.C. Bonkers! For those of you in the information technology field, Jake is currently hiring! Check out this current opportunity on LinkedIn.
Water here is just about everywhere you turn in the Keweenaw. Whether you are talking about the big lake (Superior), inland lakes (like Portage), or the many rivers and creeks, all kinds of options are available on which to recreate! Kayaking and fishing were particularly popular options for the grandsons!
Tuesday, I was up in Calumet for a meeting hosted by Jeff Ratcliffe with the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance (KEDA) along with local officials for special guest Emily Doerr who is Executive Director at the Michigan State Land Bank Authority. Calumet, Laurium, and Chassell have all been working with the Houghton County Land Bank on projects that can help our communities redevelop sites for housing and business. If you would like to learn more about development opportunities in cool, historical downtowns here in the Keweenaw, reach out to Jeff Ratcliffe with KEDA at https://kedabiz.com/
While I was in the meeting, my daughter and her family headed over to the Calumet Waterworks beach on Lake Superior. Afterwards, we met up at McLain State Park to indulge in ice cream at Sundae in the Park and to enjoy the rest of the afternoon on the breakwater and the beach on Lake Superior.
Wednesday we headed up to Copper Harbor. On our way we made stops at Eagle River Falls, Jacobs Creek Falls, and the Jampot where we enjoyed carrot cake muffins fresh from the oven!
Our next stop was the top of Brockway Mountain where you will find a spectacular view over Lake Superior and the surrounding area!
At this point, our daughter and son-in-law rode their mountain bikes. We followed them across the top of Brockway Mountain until they dropped into the trail system.
We headed down to the park in Copper Harbor to wait for them. While we were there, I had an awesome conversation with a remote worker in the real estate development field from Columbus, Ohio who spends his summers in the Keweenaw. After the bike ride was completed, we grabbed an outstanding lunch to go from the Mariner North and headed uphill for a hike at Estivant Pines. More about that in my next issue!
