Mouth of the Gratiot River
As October ended we found ourselves in a second summer with unseasonably mild temperatures. Last Saturday morning I got out for a 10k run on the rail-trail a little later than I had planned. While it was really pleasant to start, the conditions were quite warm through the second half of the run.
We would be heading to a Halloween party late in the afternoon, but decided we would make full use of day by squeezing in a drive out to the mouth of Gratiot River on Lake Superior near Ahmeek.
We usually go out to this beach in search of agates, but on this trip I brought some fishing gear along to see if any fish were moving into the river. Even though I did not catch anything, it turned out to be an awesome afternoon to be on the Lake Superior shore!
On Sunday our hiking group ventured up to the Lake Bailey Sanctuary which is located between Eagle Harbor and Silver River. I featured this hike back in the August 25th issue, but, as with all hikes up here, the trail takes on a different character depending on the season.
After hiking through the cedar swamp, the trail makes a steep climb up to the Ridge Loop. Autumn after the leaves have fallen is a good time to take this hike as the views from the ridge are more significant this time of year!
While most of the taller trees had lost their leaves there was still plenty of color among the small trees as well as with the very recently fallen aspen and birch leaves.
