National Trails Day
The past week was bookended by a couple of hikes. Last Sunday, we went with the hiking group on an adventure to the top of Mount Houghton from the Mandan Road out toward the end of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
At 1,467 feet, Mt. Houghton is one of the highest points in the Keweenaw Peninsula and provides great views of Lake Superior, Bete Grise, Lac La Belle, Bare Bluff, and Mt. Bohemia. The last portion of the hike to the top is a bit of a grind, but the views are well worth the effort. We spent quite a bit of time on top of the rhyolite outcropping on its south facing side where we enjoyed the warm, sunny day. You can see my GoPro video from the hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
We had somewhat of a heat wave during the week with the temperatures near or slightly above the 90 degree mark depending where you were. Some summers we are lucky to break 90 degrees at all, so to have this happening during spring is noteworthy. With the hot weather, I confined my workouts this past week to swimming at MTU’s SDC. That said, I did a lot of outdoor work cutting grass and splitting firewood. Feeling like a slacker for not getting in a run since last Saturday, I bumped my swim up to 2,500 yards on Friday.
After my Friday swim, I stopped by the Chassell Township office to work with our Clerk Lynn Gierke to plan out our additions to our SPARK Grant proposal and dropped off my check for the Remote Workforce Keweenaw advertisement that I will be running in the Strawberry Festival booklet.
Yesterday we headed down to Old Victoria for a National Trails Day hike being led by Lynette from the Keweenaw National Historical Park at the Victoria Mine and town site. On the way there we stopped at the General Store in Rockland. If you are looking for spices, you absolutely need to stop in to check out what is available inside the old bank vault within the store!
If you have not been to Old Victoria, this early 20th century copper mining site is definitely worth checking out! Located on the North Country Trail, you have the opportunity to take in a huge view of the Ontonagon River valley from atop the former mine’s poor rock pile and to follow the trail through one door and out the other of the mine’s hoist house.
There are four restored cabins at the town site that can give you a sense for both the tight quarters faced by the workers and technology experienced in that by-gone era.
