NCT Snowshoe from Old Victoria to Lookout Mountain
This past Sunday the hiking group met up at the Old Victoria town site near Rockland to take a snowshoe hike on the North Country Trail to Lookout Mountain and back. The day featured sharply contrasting weather as we experienced beautiful freezing fog conditions all the way Mass City where we broke into bright sunshine with a beautiful blue sky which we enjoyed throughout our hike.
On our way to Old Victoria we made a stop at the Champion Mine in Painesdale.
This copper mine operated until 1967. My 97 year old Dad recollects accompanying his father when he would deliver cedar posts into the mine on the weekend.
The drive down M-26 between Painesdale and Mass City presented an ongoing array of beautifully fog-frosted trees which made the drive pass quickly.
You would hardly have recognized it as the same day at Old Victoria!
We picked up the North Country Trail at the town site and headed uphill to the west up to the Victoria Mine site. This copper mine operated on-and-off from 1849 to 1921. The trail provides the unique experience of hiking through one door and out the next of the mine’s hoist house.
From the nearby poor rock piles we were able to take in the view of the fog we had driven through on the distant horizon.
From the mine site we headed southward picking up the recent re-route of the trail which has moved the trail from the roads and an ORV trail heading to the top of Lookout Mountain. The re-route goes through some beautiful up-and-down terrain which provides for a better experience.
On top of Lookout Mountain we enjoyed the tremendous view over the Victoria Dam and Reservoir on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River. We lingered for some time enjoying the unseasonably warm conditions with no wind and bright sunshine!

My week so far has been a mix of swimming, running, presentation development, and township business. I put in swims of over 2,000 yards and runs of over 4 miles on both Monday and Wednesday. I put together a presentation on the Historic Trail that I will give at The Bluffs next week. I also knocked out minutes from last month’s Chassell Township Planning Commission meeting and have been working on some due diligence related to a grant proposal that I will discuss in a future newsletter.
