No More False Springs
There were no last gasps by winter over the course of the last week as we solidly transitioned into beautiful spring weather! We started the week with a hike at McLain State Park beginning with the Bear Lake Trail. A couple of trumpeter swans graced the lake with their presence. Unlike our hike last fall at McLain when the surfers were out catching waves along the breakwater in strong northwest winds, Lake Superior was clearly in one of its more gentle moods.
You can catch the GoPro video of this hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
The weather improved throughout the week. By Wednesday evening’s Keweenaw Running Group run, I needed to shed my fleece about a mile into it to try to keep from overheating. It is curious how temperature can be a relative concept as it was probably only just below 60 at the time.
There was a good deal of township business on the agenda throughout the week culminating with a Planning Commission meeting on Thursday evening. There was also discussion in preparation for a panel discussion to occur the following week in Marquette on remote work.
The really great weather moved in on Friday with higher barometric pressure, clear skies, and temperatures in the 60s. We went for a hike at the Atlas Powder site near Senter. This facility produced dynamite utilized for blasting in the Keweenaw’s copper mines. Grown over and in ruins today, Atlas Powder is an historically fascinating place.
We also made a stop to explore the dry house ruins at the Quincy Mine. This location provides a commanding view of the shaft and hoist houses as well as the site’s other ruins.
The awesome weather continued into Saturday. I moved my local running from US 41 to the rail-trail which is now clear of snow and put in a 5-mile run. We then got out on the Chassell Trails and made a hike to Hamar Creek Falls.
On Saturday evening we hosted a graduation gathering in our new garage space for a friend who just received his degree in biomedical engineering from MTU. With Covid on the wane it has been really nice to have the opportunity to have more social gatherings once again!
