No Mosquitoes or Flies! (Part 1)
So there is this awesome window of opportunity that occurs in May after the snow has left the hiking trails and warm daytime temperatures make their appearance when you don’t experience mosquitoes or flies in the forest. While we don’t let their eventual presence deter us from getting out to hike, we do pack in as much activity as we can into this space.
Our week started with a hike led by friends out to Lake Superior and subsequently to the steel dam on the Salmon-Trout River at Redridge. We encountered snow on the northern facing shoreline which actually helped provide decent footing over the exposed slick, greasy sandstone.
Hiking to the steel dam our group flushed a ruffed grouse that went no farther than a nearby tree where I was able to capture this photo of it:
The steel dam is a cool place to visit. I get out there to fish both in the spring and fall. The river lives up to its name! It was a totally different experience checking it out with a camera in hand.
Check out my GoPro video from these hikes on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
Around rumbles of thunder and intermittent sunshine and raindrops on Tuesday, we squeezed in a 4-mile hike to Lake Superior at the Black Creek Nature Sanctuary. This trail travels over forest-covered dunes. We noted signs of both beaver and pileated woodpecker activity along the way.
At one point we spied this clutch of eggs between the trail and one of the creeks. Maybe one of our readers can settle the question of whether these are Canada goose eggs or turkey eggs:
Once we reached Lake Superior, we spent some time hanging out and looking for agates. I found the banded quartz agate below.
On Wednesday evening the Keweenaw Running Group was able to get in its first trail run of the season on the MTU Trails!
Immediately after getting off the trails I dashed back to Chassell to present the bids we had received for the canoe/kayak launch on the northwest side of the US 41 bridge over the Sturgeon River to the Township Board. The board approved an award subject to a final engineering review.
Thursday we headed over to Marquette where I was part of a panel discussion at InvestUP’s CEO Summit at Northern Michigan University. This was a nice opportunity to inform this awesome gathering of UP leaders about Remote Workforce Keweenaw and the economic development opportunity this strategy presents.
