No Mosquitoes or Flies (Part 3)
Our week started with a North Country Trail out-and-back hike on the Peter Wolfe Chapter’s segment 28 and part of 29 to the east of the East Branch of the Ontonagon River. We hiked an out-and-back from the east end of segment 29 in late May 2021. Last year’s hike was an experience out of a horror movie! There would have been no way we could have done it without head nets. Even with them, the buzzing from the mosquitoes and black flies was incessant and we were constantly swatting them. With only a couple of weeks difference, we had no mosquitoes and just a few black flies this year.
This hike starts at the East Branch of the Ontonagon where the river takes on a dark brown color from the Ontonagon Valley clay. White cedar is pervasive in the river bottom as well moss in this well shaded area.
The wildflowers were plentiful on the hike with no one recalling such a significant concentration of spring beauty that we found at one point along the trail.
There were a handful of small creeks and wet areas to be crossed along the way. The marsh marigolds were thriving in the swampier places.

Monday was the first time I needed to cut grass for the season (May 17th). We had a surprise booking on Monday night in our cabin as 2022 Winter Olympics mixed snowboard cross gold medalist Nick Baumgartner stayed with us ahead of his Tuesday visit at the Chassell Township Schools! Nick is one awesome guy who is every bit as genuine as what you witnessed in his interviews during the Olympics. He is definitely an inspirational guy!
Before Tuesday evening’s Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club annual meeting at the Orpheum in Hancock, we went for a walk on the Hancock waterfront from Porvoo Park.
We ran into our friends John and Jeanne along the way and joined them in picking up trash as we made our way back to Porvoo Park.
Wednesday evening was trail running with the Keweenaw Running Group on the Tolkien Trails at MTU. No mosquitoes were present! How much longer will it last? Stay tuned!
