North Country Trail Adventure
Last Friday morning we headed down to the Canyon Falls roadside park with our friend Jennifer to put in a hike on the North Country Trail. We have been working toward our #hike100NCT largely with four and six-mile hikes, but during the course of this adventure we decided to take a more meaningful bite out of our annual 100-mile goal by putting in an eight-mile hike.
The North Country Trail is an outstanding way to take in the backcountry at the stem of the Keweenaw peninsula. The trail in this area runs through dense forest and occasional fern-covered clearings along the Sturgeon River which has eroded the slate bedrock.
This stretch of the Sturgeon River has some giant white cedar along its shore. This one appeared to be well worked over by pileated woodpeckers!
All along the river we found Joe Pye Weed in bloom.
You can see my GoPro video from this hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
Saturday afternoon we went boating on Portage Lake with our friends Erik and Kara. We cruised under the Portage Lake Lift Bridge between Houghton and Hancock then went by the Keweenaw Brewfest at the Houghton Waterfront Pier.
Next time I will take you along on one of our favorite river hikes (in the river that is)!
