North Country Trail Focused
We wrapped up last week with a continued focus on building mileage toward our #hike100NCT by adding a six-mile hike and followed that up with a Sunday afternoon hike in Eagle Harbor.
Before I recap these hikes, I want to note last week’s arrival of a cruise ship, the Viking Octantis. The ship was finally able to navigate the Keweenaw Waterway after two previous failed attempts earlier this season. During last Wednesday’s Keweenaw Running Group run, we took a route past Prince’s Point to watch the Octantis (which is too tall to pass under the lift bridge) as it was departing toward the South Entry.
Friday found us back on the North Country Trail hitting the River Spur along the Sturgeon River to the east of the Canyon Falls roadside park and the Humpback Bridge. This had been an out-and-back route for awhile as the re-route up to the Herman-Nestoria Road was being developed.
There are some cool cedars along this stretch of the Sturgeon River. The recent rains had also spurred mushroom growth along this part of the trail. We even came across fresh bear tracks and a young hawk in a tree.

Saturday was spent getting things done around home, but I did manage to squeeze in a 5-mile run on the rail-trail. I got into one of those zones where I had a great pace going while thinking about other things instead of the trail. I had the misfortune of catching a toe on a protruding rock which resulted in an instant faceplant in the stamp-sand. While it took the wind out me, I managed to come out of the incident with just scrapes and no broken bones.
Sunday we hiked/bushwhacked the pine covered sand dunes around Long Lake at the Eagle Harbor Trails. The lake and surrounding ponds were covered with water lillies and I was able to capture this shot of two sandhill cranes flying low over the water.
