North Country Trail Hike to Tibbets Falls
December got started with a meeting with Kevin Store who is the Executive Director of the Portage Health Foundation. We discussed the possibility of Chassell Township partnering with the foundation on a blight remediation program. When we surveyed residents about blight in the township we found that a significant percentage of respondents were willing to contribute to a fund to help those in the community who face economic barriers to addressing blight. A partnership with the foundation would provide a 501c(3) that residents could make donations to and could manage such funds until they would be awarded to eligible recipients. Kevin indicated that the foundation would be willing to enter into such an agreement for a reasonable fee, so my next steps will be to bring this through both the planning commission and the township board.
DP Construction continued to make excellent progress with the historic interpretive trail boardwalk. Stopping by late in the day on December 1st I noted this progress.
Friday, we ran down to Marinette, Wisconsin where Julie had her one year follow up on her hip replacement with hundreds of hiking miles on it already!
We stopped by the mill site on our way home to check out progress with the historic trail.
Friday night into Saturday we picked up more snow. Julie was doing an alcohol ink class down in L’Anse on Saturday morning so I drove her down there and camped out in the Cafe L’Anse with coffee and a blueberry scone where I did a detailed review of the current complete draft of the Chassell Township master plan and forwarded comments to our consultant Pat Coleman.
On Sunday our hiking group headed down to just north of Watton to hike the North Country Trail along the Sturgeon River to Tibbets Falls. I wore snowshoes largely to keep my feet warm and to pank down the trail for those behind me who were wearing boots.
You can check out my GoPro video from the hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
