Running the Covered Road
When you are a runner in the Keweenaw, an every fall bucket list item is a run on the Covered Road from its junction with Coles Creek and Larson Roads to Liminga Road and back. Once the fall color reaches its peak, the golds you will be enveloped by here provide quite a treat for your senses! We headed out there in the rain last Saturday morning with the hope that we would catch a break that was predicted in the hourly forecast. We received a beautiful preview of the course by driving it in the rain and headed back to Houghton to do some grocery shopping. Sure enough the rain stopped and we headed back to park on the south end. Julie walked the dogs and I headed out for a run!
While I didn’t put in the full six miles, this was still a very enjoyable run and I did not turn down the pick up when Julie came along in the truck!
On Sunday afternoon we headed over to the Pilgrim Community Forest with our hiking group. The trailhead for this adventure is located at the junction of the Paradise Road and the Pilgrim Road just to the north of the Pilgrim River bridge. While it was raining when we started the hike, the forecast was for a couple hour break in the rain about an hour into our hike. This 5.6 mile out-and-back hike would be similar to the Covered Road experience as we would find ourselves immersed in gold throughout the hike!
I will leave you with just this taste for now as this hike became even more impressive once the rain departed!
