Shiitake Logs and More NCT Hiking
Last week started out with the weekly care for the grounds here at Decompress U, including cutting the grass, doing the edging, and watering the flowers to keep things looking great for our Airbnb guests. The effort this week also included soaking our shiitake logs. We started doing mushroom logs with friends six years ago and have two sets of logs with a blend of maple and ironwood that we have inoculated with mushroom spawn. We have found that a good soaking of the logs in the lake really accelerates the fruiting process.
Remote Workforce Keweenaw featured Kalen Carlson who works remotely from Laurium. You can learn about her remote work story on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page at this link.
Wednesday morning the Viking Octantis was back in the Keweenaw. We happened to spot it coming in through the Portage River across the lake shortly after sunrise.
Julie was heading out to hike the Tolkien Trails with a women’s group that morning, so I tagged along to run the trails since we had a Chassell Lions Club meeting in the evening when we would normally run with the Keweenaw Running Group. It started raining while I was out on the Troll Loop and by the time I was on the Elf Loop the precipitation was falling steadily. I was soaking wet by the time I was finished.
Afterwards I picked up a fresh supply of Remote Workforce Keweenaw hats from Diamond House International in Houghton. If you are a remote worker here in the Keweenaw and don’t have one yet, please reach out to me and I will get you one!
Thursday we were back on the North Country Trail building miles toward our #hike100NCT Challenge. We were at just over 74 miles to start the week. We drove out south of Alston to hike the Wiggle Creek segment to the source of the West Branch of the Sturgeon River. The first portion of this trail was selectively logged a few years ago; as a result, the area around the trail is thick with raspberry bushes. It hasn’t been brushed since early in the season so we found ourselves wading through them in several places. We like hiking this segment in late summer because it is home to quite a variety of mushrooms.
