Silver River and Gomanche Creek Waterfalls
Before I look back at the last week I want to say thank you to those who reached out to me to offer your kind words after the passing of my Dad. Those gestures meant a lot and I really appreciate the thoughtfulness!
The past week turned out to be a mix of workouts, meetings, township work, and get-togethers with friends capped by a really cool waterfall hike along the Silver River and Gomanche Creek outside of L’Anse. We also had some really great sunrises including this one.
I sandwiched a 4.28 mile run on US 41 on Tuesday between swims of 1,800 and 2,050 yards on Monday and Wednesday. An IT band flare-up in my hip after Tuesday’s run caused me to pull a big percentage of my swim on Wednesday and to opt for a 2.36 mile walk instead of a run from the SDC that evening.
Tuesday was spent turning out minutes for that evening’s Hancock Trails Club board meeting and attending a Team Peninsula meeting in Houghton. With the extremely mild weather forecast, the HTC board would make the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Glide-N-Gorge which is our annual March fund raiser where participants ski, snowshoe, or snow bike while eating along the way.
We needed to add a grid to our 5-Year Recreation Plan including an accessibility assessment of each of our township’s recreational assets. I met with our Planning Commission Chair, Brian Waters, Township Clerk, Lynn Gierke, and UPEA Architect Karin Cooper on Thursday to review the inventory and reach a consensus on the the accessibility assessments. After the meeting, Julie and I had dinner with six of our friends at 1902 in South Range.
Friday would be spent writing up the recreational asset inventory, accessibility assessments, and action plans we discussed at Thursday’s meeting and then circulating the document for feedback.
Saturday morning I attended the Sauna Forum at the Finnish-American Heritage Center in Hancock where the concept of a public sauna in the area was discussed. We have been talking about the possibility of a public sauna in Chassell so participating was of great interest to me. Jim Kurtti who heads up the Finnish Theme Committee in Hancock kicked off the discussion.
You can see a recap of the forum at this link to the Daily Mining Gazette.
After the discussion I checked out the sauna expo on Quincy Green.
Taking advantage of the extremely mild weather, I squeezed in a 4.28 mile run on US 41 ahead of a late afternoon dinner gathering of a number of our hiking friends. Our friends Krishna and Akhila prepared quite a feast of their cuisine from southern India!
Sunday our hiking group met up south of L’Anse for a hike to some of the waterfalls on the Silver River and Gomanche Creek. The weather was extremely mild and the snow was so thin that we did not even have to wear snowshoes.
You can see my GoPro video from the hike on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
