Ski Crazy
With so much fresh lake effect snow this past week, cross country skiing has been continually front of mind since the last issue of the RWK Newsletter! After skiing for 2 1/2 hours a week ago Saturday, Mark and I were back out for another two hours at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids the following day with our friends Wolf and Carolyn! The temperature had dropped precipitously from the pleasant 20s the day before to around 10 degrees with a lot of wind, but we found plenty of cover in the forest and a vigorous ski kept us from getting cold.
Mid-week found us skiing up at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge where we found plenty of fluffy lake effect snow. The trails had been rolled that morning and there was a fresh layer of un-cut powder on top of them. This 9.4k trail systems is both beautiful and enjoyable to ski! Its 3.3k North Eastern Loop is one of my favorite trails as it has some fun downhill runs through the woods. You can get a sense for the wooded portion of the trail from the GoPro video I shot of this ski with my friends Mark, Ken, Linda, Dale, and Margo at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
Be sure to check in at the lodge to sign their release form ahead of you ski and to stop in afterwards for hot chocolate, soup, and other great lunch choices!

Thursday afternoon we finally made it out to ski the Boundary Road Trails here on the northern edge of Chassell Township. This is a new skiing/snowshoeing opportunity in the area as a result of the efforts of Arlyn and Sandy Aronson. We stayed on the wide rolled trails which skied nicely even though they were not tracked.

Saturday turned into a day full of adventure starting with a 10k run along US 41. With a clear afternoon with bright sunshine we headed to Eagle River to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Superior between there and Copper Harbor. We made stops at Eagle River Falls, Jacobs Creek Falls, Great Sand Bay, and the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse.
After driving back from Copper Harbor, we headed out to Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids for a moonlight ski with a large number of our friends! The conditions were excellent as we found ourselves under a nearly full moon with close to a clear sky. It was a brisk 12 degrees with no wind which made for an enjoyable experience as the bright moonlight illuminated the snowy environs!
