Snow Arrives in Earnest!
Wednesday, November 16th, was my first snow covered road run of the season with the Keweenaw Running Group. The spikes were definitely in order as we headed up Sharon on snowpacked sidewalks then down Gundlach and out on Pilgrim Road. As much as I enjoy being out on the trails the rest of the year, I have to say that I have a bias toward roads from a consistent pace standpoint.
On Thursday, DP Construction began work on our historic interpretive trail boardwalk here in Chassell! I have talked frequently about this project in past postings, but it was very exciting to reach this day after so much planning and preparation. You can follow the work on the project here on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Newsletter.
Julie would be presenting an alcohol ink demonstration as part of Ladies Night in Calumet so I ran her up to Gallery on 5th so she could set up and I could run back to the Chassell Heritage Center for a late afternoon meeting with Pablo Majano, Jen Tucker, and Vicki Schwab from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to discuss progress toward becoming a Redevelopment Ready Community. The snow was coming down in the course of my drive back to Chassell which provided beautiful scenery along the way.
Before going to the Heritage Center for my 4:30 p.m. meeting with the MEDC, I stopped by the boardwalk construction where work had ended for the day to check out the progress.
I had the opportunity to take Pablo, Jen, and Vicki through the Heritage Center and shared our township’s rich lumbering history which is showcased there and will be featured by our historic interpretive trail under construction on the former mill site. In addition to talking about our current master planning process and other projects involving Chassell, I had the opportunity to discuss the Remote Workforce Keweenaw initiative and the significant impact remote work is having in Chassell and throughout the Keweenaw.
After our meeting, I headed back up to Calumet where Julie was wrapping up her alcohol ink demonstration. You can see Julie’s alcohol ink work on Facebook.
The snow showed up overnight and into Thursday with quite a punch! We had at least 8” of snow by late Thursday morning, but fortunately it was light fluffy powder that shoveled with little effort.
That afternoon I got a heads up from our friend Eero that we had some trumpeter swans on the lake. Sure enough this family of five was cruising the shoreline.
Friday brought more snow to shovel as well as an opportunity to get together with our friends Steve and Lisa who have recently moved to Chassell.
Over the weekend we got in our first ski of the season at Swedetown with our hiking/skiing group. After having had snow over the previous several days, it was great to see the sun and blue sky again! Even though it was not tracked yet and not rolled in many places, we greatly enjoyed our 2 1/2 hours of skiing.
You can see my GoPro video from the ski on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
