When I left you last, Mark and I had skied the Chassell Classic Ski Trail under beautiful sunshine this past Saturday. I wanted to share this photo that I took just before we started cruising back down from the upper loop.
I shared my GoPro video from this ski last time, but I pulled one of my clips of a favorite stretch of mine between the 2k cutoff and the cemetery and put it out as a reel on Instagram. Mark had the misfortune of crashing in the deep snow off trail, but came out of it okay. You can see the reel on Instagram at this link.
Saturday night we met up with friends at the Orpheum in Hancock to see Keweenaw Brewgrass play a benefit concert for the Keweenaw Land Trust.
The KLT has protected more than 7,000 acres in Houghton, Keweenaw, and Baraga counties. Its focus on conserving amazing land and watershed assets in the region is something we support and I would encourage you to learn more about them on their website at this link: https://keweenawlandtrust.org/.
Sunday, the hiking group headed down toward Bruce Crossing for a snowshoe hike on the North Country Trail to O Kun de Kun Falls. We picked up our friends Mat and Carol here in Chassell who were great company on the drive. The hike would add 2.6 miles toward our #hike100NCT and would be topped with pasties from Krupp’s in Twin Lakes.
The recent cold snap had frozen the Baltimore River as well as both the upper falls and O Kun de Kun Falls, but we did not see anywhere near as extensive ice curtains as we saw along the river last winter. I suspect that this will change with the mid-winter thaw we find ourselves in for the remainder of this week.
You can see my GoPro video from the hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
The week so far has has included 2,000 and 2,200 yard swims on Monday and Wednesday and just short of a 7 miles ski on the MTU Trails on Tuesday.
Following up my swim on Wednesday morning, I put in a 4.29 mile run on the clear US 41 shoulders on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the evening’s Lions Club meeting. Chris Holmes at UPEA forwarded the plans for the boardwalk and sidewalk projects that are key components to be funded by the SPARK Grant. The Lions Club is a key partner on the sidewalk and restrooms remodel, so I shared the sidewalk plan with board representatives to make sure the plan is consistent with their expectations.
Moriah Goodall who manages the Chassell Farmers Market spoke to the Lions Club. 2024 will be its third year in Chassell and Moriah grew it to 45 vendors in 2023 with growth expected in 2024. She is looking to catch Marquette which had 63 vendors.
Moriah has outstanding plans for improving the market this year including boat rides to the South Entry on Lake Superior and laser tag in the park. Be sure to follow the Chassell Farmers Market on Facebook and check out the market on Wednesday this coming June through September under the pavilion at Centennial Park!

I had a great trip up last week and got out on the Tech trails during the blizzard on Sunday and then I skied with John D on the M.H. trails last Tuesday. I look forward to my next rip up.
Happy Trails
