Splake Fishing on Copper Harbor
Last Wednesday involved an early morning journey up to Copper Harbor to go splake (a cross between a lake trout and a brook trout) fishing at the invitation of my friend Rob Handler along with two local Lutheran ministers on a boat captained by Travis White from Keweenaw Charters. We got on the water just before sunrise.
Travis wasted no time getting us on the fish and it wasn’t long before everyone was reeling something in. We were soon swapping smaller ones out of the live well for bigger fish. I probably caught the most colorful fish of the day while Rob caught the biggest one that exceeded 30 inches.
You can check out my GoPro video from this fishing adventure on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel at this link:
I got out for a run that evening with the Keweenaw Running Group on the MTU Trails. Before heading out, Julie brined the splake I kept and then I put it in the smoker. I dialed it in just below 150 degrees for the first couple of hours with a plan to increase the temperature after returning from the run.
The fall colors provided an awesome backdrop, but it was important not to sightsee too much as falling leaves were starting to cover rocks and roots along the way!
Upon getting home, I increased the heat in the smoker up to 190 degrees for the next hour and a half. After about four hours in the smoker, the splake was ready. The skin pealed off easily and the bones pulled right out.
Talk about great eating fish! Splake rates among the best in my book!
