Strawberry Festival and Touring Mt. Horace Greeley
We have had family in town this week so I have some catching up to do here at the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Newsletter! The interview I noted in the last issue aired on the 4th of July on Channel 3. The interview provided a nice opportunity to discuss Chassell’s Centennial Park as well as the recreation grants we have received from the Portage Health Foundation which have supported our efforts to make Chassell a great place to live, work, and play. You can see the interview at this link: https://www.upmatters.com/our-community/our-community-tour-chassell-exploring-through-recreational-opportunities/
On Tuesday, Dr. John Durocher, who we worked with on the development of our 10-station fitness trail here in Chassell in 2019, delivered the signs, posts, and hardware for each of the fitness stations. Dr. Durocher had helped us select the exercise equipment with an eye on a balanced workout as well as where best to place the equipment on the trail. Some of his students helped with the construction of the trail as well as with the development of videos on how to use the equipment which we have located on the township’s webpage at:
Dr. Durocher moved on to Purdue Northwest University, but he and his students secured funding and completed work on the signs to go along with each of the stations on the trail. I will discuss the installation of these signs in my next issue.
On Wednesday, we turned over the cabin for our next Airbnb guests and I cut the grass for the eighth time this season. Our Keweenaw Running Group ran the Tolkien Trails at MTU:
After the run while talking with my friend Rob, I learned about another remote worker here in the Keweenaw who is an engineer involved with the automotive industry.
Thursday morning I had coffee at Lacey’s Curbside Bistro here in Chassell with a remote worker from here in Chassell who is the Director of Operations for a digital marketing firm back east. I look forward to featuring him in an upcoming RWK vignette!
Late Thursday afternoon we went to the pavilion at Centennial Park here in Chassell to clean strawberries for the Copper Country Strawberry Festival. There was a huge turnout of volunteers which resulted in all the berries being cleaned by shortly after 6:00 p.m.
I put in 4-hour shifts from 8 to 12 on both Friday and Saturday mornings preparing strawberry shortcakes at the pavilion. On Friday, I was volunteering along with Eric Zadorecky who is a Chassell-based remote worker who is a technologist for Quicken Loans.
During my shift on Saturday, I volunteered with another remote worker who supervises insurance investigators from the Keweenaw for a firm back east and then met the son of another volunteer who recently moved back from Arlington, Virginia, to work remotely from the Keweenaw. I will soon be featuring the latter in a RWK vignette.
Saturday afternoon we got out for a walk on the Nara Nature Trail and the Peepsock Trail near the mouth of the Pilgrim River. It was a beautiful afternoon to get out in the sunny and low humidity conditions!
Sunday we went with our hiking group up to Mt. Horace Greeley which is the highest point in the Keweenaw at 1,512 feet of elevation. Steve Jurmu with funintheup.com set up a tour of this Air Force facility from the Cold War era with its new owners who provided us a very informative tour.
You can see my GoPro video from this hike on this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube channel:
