Summer in April
Winter came to an abrupt end this past week in the Keweenaw! You would not have known that based upon how the week started when we snowshoed at the Lake Linden - Hubbell School Forest where there was well over a foot of snow on the ground.
Under clear skies, the temperature would range from the 60s to the 80s all week long. We had at least a foot of snow in the yard as the week began. The melt occurred rapidly and I jumped on the opportunity to start raking the yard as the snow receded. By the end of the week we only had a couple of tiny patches of snow left. With the yard almost completely raked and the sidewalks edged, we have a huge jump on our preparations for the upcoming Airbnb season!
This past week Remote Workforce Keweenaw featured Katelyn and Mark Preston who recently returned to the Keweenaw with both working remotely!
You can learn their remote work story on the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page at this link.
At last week’s Chassell Township Planning Commission meeting we made a final recommendation to the township board to go forward with Feighner Boat Lifts & Docks out of Charlotte, Michigan for the canoe/kayak launch on the Sturgeon River. A good deal of time over the last week has been spent working out the details to move this forward. We also met this past week with Portage Paddle Sports as they have been awarded the canoe/kayak/paddleboard rental concession for the township. I also had an awesome conversation with a remote worker in Chassell who I learned about from Chassell Township Schools Superintendent and Principal Marco Guidotti. No spoilers here, so you will have to stay tuned!
I have continued to rehab my leg injuries by swimming on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at pool at MTU’s SDC. I have been swimming 1800 to 2000 yards each time out and have been making excellent progress with my recovery. I have set a target for next Wednesday to go back to running.
With the temperature well into the 70s yesterday evening, we sat out on the deck with our friend Steve and our neighbors JD and Laurie stopped by with their telescope so we could check out the large assemblages of trumpeter swans and diving ducks that were taking advantage of the open water where Portage Lake meets Pike Bay.
We also fired up the sauna which felt great after a full day of yard!
Taking advantage of the small amount of open water in front of our seawall, I harnessed my sisu and took advantage of the opportunity to give my leg an ice bath!
