Sunrises, Northern Lights, and Local Hiking
The past week started with some meaningful snow as we picked up 8 inches here in Chassell which required me to get out and shovel a couple of times on Monday and Tuesday.
The early part of my week was focused on getting an RFP on the street to secure an engineering firm to serve as the prime professional for helping Chassell Township carry out our SPARK Grant projects at Centennial Park. Information about this opportunity can be found on the Chassell.net website under the Township Information & Zoning tab and then clicking on Planning Commission.
Also early last week, our North Country Trail Hike 100 patches arrived in the mail! This marked my 8th consecutive year and Julie’s 7th in meeting the challenge.
This past month we featured remote worker Todd Gast on Remote Workforce Keweenaw. If you didn’t catch Todd’s story on social media, you can learn his remote work story by clicking on this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw Facebook page.
On Wednesday, Hancock Trails Club Treasurer John Diebel and I met up with Jesse Wiederhold from Visit Keweenaw to receive a ceremonial $2,500 check to support the Hancock Trails Club in conjunction with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation’s Giving Tuesday. The club sincerely appreciates Visit Keweenaw’s support of our trails at Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids which are an important asset for both local residents and visitors to the Keweenaw who enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, biking, and hiking!
On Wednesday evening it was time to hunt down my Yaktrax for a run on the snow covered streets of Houghton from the SDC at MTU with the Keweenaw Running Group. Like studded tires for the feet, these will be standard equipment for the rest of my winter runs!
We also had beautiful sunrises and northern lights this past week. From recent reports, it sounds like we are into a very active solar cycle which should create even more opportunities for excellent celestial viewing! Here is time-lapse video and some of the photos I captured last week.
With sunny weather and clear shoulders, I took to US 41 for a run on Saturday afternoon.
Our hiking group met up on Sunday afternoon at the Nara Trailhead to do just short of 4 miles of hiking on the mountain biking trails. Twenty-seven showed up which is one of the largest groups I can recall seeing. The sunny and seasonably mild conditions were likely a big factor in the great turnout.
You can see my GoPro video from the hike at this link to the Remote Workforce Keweenaw YouTube Channel:
